Are liquid aminos a glorified soy sauce?
What exactly are liquid aminos, and are they good for you?
We Asians love Chinese cuisine - and many dishes rely on soy sauce (shoyu). It’s delicious, but frequent use can mean a lot of sodium.
Healthier alternatives exist with lower sodium, gluten-free options, and the same salty umami satisfaction. Liquid aminos keep showing up in healthy and vegan recipes as a soy sauce alternative.
What is liquid aminos?
Liquid aminos are concentrated amino acids derived from soybeans. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. The body needs 20 amino acids to function - 11 it makes itself, and 9 essential ones we need from food.
Amino acids support gut health, hair, skin, digestion, nails, brain function, and more.
What makes them special?
Unlike soy sauce, liquid aminos are made by combining hydrolyzed soybeans with water - so they’re naturally gluten-free. That’s useful for anyone avoiding gluten.
They’re also helpful for vegetarians and vegans who want an extra nutrient boost from essential amino acids.
Just 1/2 teaspoon of Bragg Liquid Aminos can pack a similar punch to about 1 tablespoon of soy sauce.
They’re made from only two ingredients: soybeans and purified water - no chemicals, artificial colouring, or preservatives.
What do they taste like?
Similar to soy sauce, with a slightly sweeter, richer, meatier umami flavour and less saltiness. Great for salads, rice, beans, tofu marinades, meat, fish, veggies, gravies, sauces, casseroles, and stir-fries.
Next time you’d reach for soy sauce, try liquid aminos instead.
